Vanta policy templates: what you get, and where Policyseed fits
Updated
People search for Vanta policy templates while they evaluate Vanta or before they buy a compliance platform. This page sets out what Vanta’s templates are and how you get them, what Policyseed offers by comparison, when Vanta is the right choice, and how to use both. The two do different jobs: Vanta runs a compliance program, and Policyseed writes the policy documents.
Every statement about Vanta is taken from Vanta’s own public pages and help center, with the source numbered in brackets. Policyseed is not affiliated with Vanta.

What Vanta’s policy templates are
- Vanta provides ready-made templates for the policies your frameworks require, built on framework requirements and security practices. They are added to your policy list based on the frameworks you set up.[1]
- Policy Builder walks you through customizing a template one section at a time, with editing guidance for SOC 2 and ISO 27001:2022 policies and a live preview.[3]
- You can convert a Policy Builder draft to the free-form policy editor for changes the builder does not allow. Once converted, that draft cannot go back to Policy Builder.[3]
- For frameworks without Policy Builder support, you fill out the template in Vanta's policy editor.[1]
- After editing, you submit a policy for approval and choose the approver, who can be you or someone else.[5]
- Once employees accept a policy, Vanta updates the related policy acceptance test.[1]
How you get them
- The templates are part of the Vanta platform. Vanta's pricing page lists a policy template library among the features of its Essentials plan.[2]
- Vanta does not publish prices. Its pricing page asks you to request a demo to get personalized pricing.[2]
- Separately, Vanta's website offers a free ISO 27001 documentation policy template as a download.[6]

What Policyseed is, by comparison
Policyseed is a free, open-source (Apache-2.0) SOC 2 policy generator. You answer 23 questions and your browser renders 22 policies as Markdown, with no account and nothing stored on a server. The optional Audit Kit ($59, one time) rewrites sections 4 and 5 of each policy around the tools you named and adds Word files, a criteria crosswalk, starter registers, an acknowledgment form and a review calendar.
Policyseed does not connect to your systems, collect evidence, monitor controls, track approvals or acceptance, or introduce you to auditors. It produces documents that your team owns and maintains.
You can read every policy before you decide: the template index lists all 22, the sample shows the Audit Kit output for a fictional company, and the Audit Kit page lists every file in the ZIP.
When Vanta is the right choice
A compliance platform earns its cost through what happens after the policies are written. From Vanta’s own pages:
- Vanta's SOC 2 page describes pulling data from the tools you already use, mapping evidence to controls and running automated tests that monitor controls hourly.[4]
- Vanta introduces customers to vetted, independent auditors, and auditors review your evidence in a dedicated portal inside Vanta.[4]
- Policy approval and employee acceptance are tracked in the platform alongside the rest of your program.[1]
If you expect to repeat the examination every year, have many systems to pull evidence from, plan to add frameworks, or have customers asking for ongoing assurance, Vanta can save more time than any template. In that case starting from Vanta’s own templates is reasonable, because they are already mapped to its controls. Policyseed does none of that work; it is a document generator.
How to use both
A common pattern is to write the policies first, with an owner for each, and bring them into the platform when you adopt one. Vanta’s help center describes how:
- You can import an existing policy into the matching Vanta policy by uploading a PDF or DOCX file, or by syncing it from Confluence, Google Drive or SharePoint.[1]
- Uploaded files must be .docx or .pdf and 50 MB or less. Vanta notes that importing a .docx file can change its formatting.[5]
The Audit Kit ($59) gives you each policy as a Word file you can upload as it is. With the free generator, open the Markdown in a word processor and save it as DOCX or PDF first. Policyseed's 22 titles will not line up one to one with Vanta's policy list, so decide which Vanta policy each file replaces before you import, and check the formatting after each upload.
Whichever route you take, management approves the policies and a licensed CPA firm performs the SOC 2 examination. Neither tool replaces either step.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I get Vanta's policy templates?
- They come with the Vanta platform. Vanta adds templates to your policy list based on the frameworks you set up, and you customize them in Policy Builder or the policy editor. Separately, Vanta's website offers a free ISO 27001 documentation policy template as a download.
- How much do Vanta's policy templates cost?
- Vanta does not publish prices; its pricing page offers personalized pricing after a demo request, and lists a policy template library in its Essentials plan. We do not quote third-party estimates. For comparison, Policyseed's 22 policies are free under Apache-2.0, and the Audit Kit is $59 one time.
- Can I import Policyseed policies into Vanta?
- Vanta's help center describes importing an existing policy as a PDF or DOCX file (50 MB or less), or syncing it from Confluence, Google Drive or SharePoint. The Audit Kit produces DOCX files; the free generator produces Markdown you can save as DOCX or PDF. Policyseed has no integration with Vanta, so you import each file yourself.
- Should I use Vanta or Policyseed?
- They do different jobs. Vanta is a compliance automation platform: integrations, automated tests, evidence collection, acceptance tracking and auditor introductions, with policy templates as one module. Policyseed produces the policy documents and nothing else. If you need the platform, start from its templates or import ours; if you only need the documents, Policyseed is enough.
